Dumbo
The Flying Elephant

The wonderful Dumbo The Flying Elephant
has been taking to the skies ever since
Disneyland's opening in July of 1955. The
original attraction had only ten flying elephants
and were to be painted pink. The attraction was
to be called "10 Pink Elephants On Parade".
Walt Disney however did not want guest riding
in alcohol-induced elephants, and had them all
painted gray before the opening of Disneyland.
The original ride vehicles also had hinged ears
that would move up and down to give the
illusion of flight. The mechanics caused too
many problems and soon were made one piece.
Timothy the Mouse that tops the attraction
originally has a whip in his hand that was then
replaced with a feather, now however the whip
has returned to Timothy as before.

In 1990 a few years after the 1983 remodel, a
malfunction from age and fatigue caused the
ride to be removed. Fortunately there was a 16
arm Dumbo attraction designed for Euro
Disney that was not ready for installation yet so
it was brought to Disneyland and another was
put into the works of Euro Disney. This new
Dumbo also has a circa 1915 band organ that
provides the music for the ride.

The reproduction of this memorable attraction
done with wonderful color and detail, give the
sense of motion and life to this miniature. This
miniature sells for $295, plus tax, and is
available at the Disneyana at Disneyland.
