Astro Orbitor
Astro Orbitor

The Astro Orbitor was the forth in
the Robert Olszewski
Commemorative Edition. The
premiere date for this sculpture was
February 18th 2006. The miniature
retails for $190.00 at the
Disneyana, Disney Gallery, The
World of Disney and Off The Page,
at Disney's  California Adventure.

The Astro Orbitor was originally
known as the Astro Jets, opening on
March 24 1956 and closed in 1966.
The attraction then became the
Rocket Jets in 1967 with the
remodel of Tomorrowland. With the
addition of the People Movers, the
Rocket Jets were placed a top the
platform giving the young pilots a
great view. Once again with the face
lift of Tomorrowland, on May 24
1998 the Rocket Jets were moved
from the platform to the Main
Street entrance of Tomorrowland
The Astro Orbitor as it is now called
stands 65 feet tall and is a bright
brass and gold structure. The
attraction has a 19th century look
drawing inspiration from a sketch
by Leonardo da Vinci of the
"astrolabe" device. The astrolabe
was used to figure out how the solar
system works.
Like the original Astro Jets, guest
load the rockets, now inspired from
the Jules Verne era, on the ground.
Now you fly past orbiting satellites
influenced by century old
astronomical designs. As for the old
Rocket Jet platform, it became
"Observatron" a light and sound
show every 15 minutes.

Even though I have not been on the
Astro Orbitor in a long time, Robert's
miniature makes me feel like I'm
behind the control. This incredible
piece has the same warm glow and
detail as the attraction. Looking at
some of the photos you can not tell
if is the real thing. Because of
Robert's work I see the attraction in
a new light. The art work has the
ability to  capture movement as if it
were spinning around. I just hope
the pictures do this his work justice.
